“The Flaming heart of Danko” is a Bessarabian folk tale beautifully rendered by Maxim Gorky, a celebrated Soviet writer. The story was published in one of his short stories collections – “The old Woman Izergil”. It is a fascinating story that captures the dynamics of the relationship bethween those who lead and the people led by them. It was part of our school curriculum and had deeply influenced my childhood in Bulgaria. A good English translation is difficult to find. This one is transcribed from the YouTube video. I have also added a few paragraphs to finish the ending as per the original text. Enjoy!
