BASICS OF MEDITATION
The Spiritual Heart
The human being is said to have three hearts. One is physical and can be dissected by the surgeon’s knife. The psychic heart is that heart that is led by an orderly mind. The spiritual heart has control over heart and mind both. It is not subject to sorrow, pain and misery.
In the human body there are two hemispheres—the upper and the lower—and there are seven spheres. That which connects both hemispheres is called anahata chakra. This is the spiritual heart. It is located at the space between the two breasts.
This chakra is represented by two interlocking triangles. The triangle that is pointing upward represents human endeavor, and the triangle pointing downward is the grace of God, or the descending force. That which is pointed upward is the ascending force. Together they form a star. The Jewish tradition calls it the star of David, the Christian tradition calls it the cross of the Sacred Heart, and the Hindu tradition calls it the anahata chakra. When the mind is focused on the spiritual heart, it attains a state of deep concentration.
The spiritual heart: Your inner treasure.
“Do you want to be happy?
Then do not overestimate the power of your mind and do not under-estimate the light of your heart.
It is better to meditate in the heart than in the mind. The mind is like Times Square on New Year’s Eve; the heart is like a lonely cave in the Himalayas. If you meditate in the mind, you will be able to meditate for perhaps five minutes; and out of that five minutes, for one minute you may meditate powerfully. After that you will feel your whole head getting tense. First you get joy and satisfaction; then you may feel a barren desert. But if you meditate in the heart, you acquire the capacity to identify yourself with the joy and satisfaction that you get, and then it becomes permanently yours.
If you meditate in the mind, you do not identify; you try to enter into something. When you want to enter into somebody else’s house to get what that person has, either you have to break down the door or you have to plead with the owner of the house to open the door. When you plead, you feel that you are a stranger, and the owner of the house also feels that you are a stranger. Then he thinks, “Why should I allow a stranger to come into my house?” But if you use the heart, immediately the heart’s qualities of softness, sweetness, love and purity come to the fore. When the owner of the house sees that you are all heart, immediately his own heart will become one with yours and he will let you in. He will feel your oneness with him and say, “What do you want from my house? If you need peace, then take it. If you need light, then take it.”
One more thing: if you enter into the house with your mind, you will see some delicious fruit and immediately try to grab it. You are satisfied when you get it, even though you do not have the capacity to eat all the fruit. But if you use the heart, you will find that your capacity of receptivity is boundless. Again, if you use the mind, you will try to make a selection. You will say, “This piece of fruit is better; this one is worse.” But if you enter into the house with your heart, you will feel that everything there is yours, and you will enjoy it all. The heart centre is the centre of oneness. First you identify with the truth and then, on the strength of your identification, you become the truth”.

Sri Aurobindo on the psychic being
“The psychic being is in the heart centre in the middle of the chest (not in the physical heart, for all the centres are in the middle of the body), but it is deep behind. When one is going away from the vital into the psychic, it is felt as if one is going deep deep down till one reaches that central place of the psychic. The surface of the heart centre is the place of the emotional being; from there one goes deep to find the psychic. The more one goes, the more intense becomes the psychic happiness which you describe.
Psychic Being same as the Vedic Agni
Purani: You have said that the psychic being is also a personality.
Sri Aurobindo: Yes, there is the psychic Purusha.
Purani: Does the psychic being develop from birth to birth?
Sri Aurobindo: It is not the psychic being itself that develops, but it guides the evolution of the individual being by increasing the psychic element in the nature of the individual. It is these personalities in nature that are bound.
Purani: Then it seems that the function of the psychic being is the same as that of Vedic Agni who is the God of Fire, who is the leader of the journey.
Sri Aurobindo: Yes. Agni is the God of the psychic and, among other things that it does, it also leads the upward journey”.
Signs of Agni Yoga Heart 1932
“After our daily labors, let us gather to discourse about the heart. It will lead us beyond the domains of Earth toward the Subtle World, in order to bring us closer to the sphere of Fire
“To behold with the eyes of the heart; to listen with the ears of the heart of the roar of the world; to peer into the future with the comprehension of the heart; to remember the cumulations of the past through the heart; thus must one impetuously advance upon the path of ascent. Creativeness encompasses the fiery potentiality, and is impregnated with the sacred fire of the heart. Therefore, upon the path to the Hierarchy, upon the path of Great Service, upon the path of Communion, synthesis is the one luminous path of the heart. How can the manifested rays be radiated if the flame is not affirmed in the heart? It is precisely the quality of the magnet that is inherent in the heart. The highest creativeness is imbued with this great law. Hence, each consummation, each union, each great cosmic unification is achieved through the flame of the heart. By what means can the foundation of the great steps be laid? Verily, only through the heart. Thus the arcs of consciousness are fused by the flame of the heart.
Thus, we shall keep in memory the beauteous attraction of the magnet of the heart, which links all manifestations. Verily, the silver thread that links the Teacher with the disciple is the great magnet of the heart. The union between Teacher and disciple affirms the essence of all evolutions.” Heart, 1
